From the seed of the 14 songwriters who participated in the first annual Spokane Songwriters Festival comes the flowering of the 21 who participated the following year. May 10, 2003 provided a snapshot of the music community in and around Springfield, Missouri, as downtown club musicians “taped their regrets to the microphone stand” and sang to the countryside of Spokane, Missouri, without the clinking of glasses or the idle chatter of hipsters. MayApple captured the day in its entirety and we present the best of what each songwriter had to offer. Included is a yet-unheard song by Mark Bilyeu of Big Smith; an old favorite by Jay Williamson of the same; the CD debut of bluegrass siren Cindy Woolf; Sheri Hurst of the Honky Tonk Chateau accompanying herself on electric piano; the first released performance of Eric Leick’s sure-to-be-immortal “Dust”; Dallas Jones a capella; a transcendental version of “Flowers in the Woods” by Jonathan Bentley; a storm-ravaged performance of a new song by Mike Stevens, unavailable elsewhere; an instrumental by award-winning dulcimer Gary Gallier; and much more, including the talents of members of Bell Dora, the Morells, and Mincks and Miller. You can participate in the day much as the participants did, as the thunderstorm threatens, arrives, and subsides.

This CD comes with a bonus disc of a song also recorded on that day, “Desert Storm A-Brewin’ ’03.” Grady Oaks is a performer you may or (most likely) may not have heard of. He has been the bass singer for many country-gospel quartets, most notably with the John Barleycorns in the 60’s and early 70’s. Grady claims that he holds the world record for the lowest bass note ever recorded, which is disputed, some say unfairly, by the Guiness Book of World Records. His brief comeback hinged on the ultra-patriotic “Desert Storm A-Brewin,” in 1991, which was re-released in 2003 at the advent of the second Iraq war. If you agree with Grady and his politics, then your heart may well burst with pride at hearing this live recording. If you don’t agree, you’ll be rolling on the floor with laughter. Grady Oaks: a true patriot.
