Big Smith with Speakeasy this weekend in Springfield! We’re calling it “Big Easy.”

Big Smith to go it alone Friday night at the Outland Ballroom, joined by Speakeasy Saturday night

It’s about time we got around to this. Speakeasy and Big Smith are both Springfield institutions. Both bands got going around the same time. We’ve played with them often. We’ve jammed with them numerous times. But for whatever reason, we have yet to play a show together in Springfield, our home town. So, it’s time to put that notch on our pistols this weekend, at the Outland Ballroom downtown. Here’s how the weekend will go down.

Friday.

Big Smith is going to do its own show, starting at 9:45 and playing until 1:00 a.m. Opening will be Noah Earle, the fabulous singer-songwriter that we are happy to call our label-mate and friend. He’ll start at 9:00 This is a non-smoking show.  The cover is $10.

Saturday

Big Smith goes first, starting around 9:30. We’ll get in a good healthy set of our own. Speakeasy takes the stage next, then at the end of the night we’ll do the big jam session blow-out. Of course, there’ll be all kinds of cross-pollination guest musician stuff going on all night between the two bands. The cover for this night is $12.

We sure hope to see you out at one or both of these shows.

The Outland Ballroom is located at 326 South Avenue in Springfield, Missouri. You can call (417) 869-7625 for more info.

Big Smith is at George’s Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville, Arkansas next Friday & Saturday, April 11 & 12.

Big Smith & Blue Mountain play three shows together in April

Blue Mountain, alt-country founders, contemporaries of Uncle Tupelo, have made an improbable reunion reality, to the delight and amazement of their fans. Count Big Smith among them. If Blue Mountain was before your time, you may be familiar with the songwriting and guitar-slinging of Cary Hudson. After three splendid solo albums, he has reunited with the original Blue Mountain lineup of bassist Laurie Stirrat (twin sister of Wilco’s bassist John Stirrat, ex-Healthy White Baby) and drummer Frank Coutch. To bring their heavy folk-blues mix back to the Midwest, they’re going to be doing three shows with little ol’ us, Big Smith, in St. Louis, Columbia, and Lawrence, Kansas, April 17 – 19. See all the details in our live music listings at the bottom of this newsletter.

Big Smith confirmed for the Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival, June 5-8

This is a big one for us, as Wakarusa is developing into the largest music festival in the Midwest. There will be some names there you’ll recognize, like Emmylou Harris, the Flaming Lips, the Avett Brothers, Leftover Salmon and many, many more. Our festival showcase will be at in the Revival Tent at 1:30 pm on Thursday, June 5. If you’re so fortunate to be hanging out in the VIP tent, we’ll also be performing acoustic there on Wednesday the 4th. Here is the festival’s website. We’ll keep you updated as the weekend draws near.
