Big Weekend in Kansas City area with Big Smith, Speakeasy, Charliehorse, and more

This Friday night finds us at the Beaumont in Kansas City, Missouri, sharing a bill with hometown pals Speakeasy and soulful locals Brothers Green for a rare all-ages show. As usual, we’ll figure out some sort of ridiculous high-jinx, as some manner of bodacious jamming is sure to occur. Details:

Doors open at 8:00 p.m. Brothers Green start the evening at 9:00 p.m., Speakeasy plays at 10:00 p.m. and Big Smith at 11:00 p.m. (816) 561-2560. Then Saturday we cross over to the Sunflower State for a night at the Bottleneck in Lawrence, Kansas, with our favorite country-rock band, Arkansas’ Charliehorse. These guys are kicking a** and taking names lately, y’all. You’ve got my word on it, but don’t ask me; they’ve just been nominated for a couple of Northwest Arkansas Music Awards, not surprisingly. Also on the bill is another rootsy ensemble from Fayetteville, Cletus Got Shot. This should be one great night of hillbilly soul!

Tour Report: Recording at Ardent, Touring Stax, Eating Crawfish, Soaking up the Mississippi Sun

We did all of the above last weekend, and it was great. After meeting new friends and hopefully future fans in Jackson and Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and eating a fine home-cooked meal at the home of Bill and Marteel Higgins, we went up to Memphis and recorded a session of choice originals at the renown Ardent Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. This studio has been the site of too many historic recordings to mention, but has played host to clients such as Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, James Taylor, the White Stripes and most of the historic Stax roster. Our performance was videotaped for a show called “Ardent Live” to be broadcast on Ardent’s website – we’ll let you know as soon as it is up and running. The next day, we got a tour of the Stax Soul Museum with Ardent founder and Stax producer John Fry as our personal host. I could go on about it, but I’ll let my brother Jody take over from here, as he blogged about it on our MySpace page, and to our delight it was re-posted on Ardent’s homepage. Click here to read more.

And in case you’re wondering about the menu at the Higgins’ home, here it is:

Chicken casserole

Hot pineapple salad

Beans w/Chow-chow

Glazed sweet potatoes

Rolls w/butter

Sweet tea

Blueberry Yum-Yum

Dallas Jones on the Radio

For everyone within broadcast range, make sure and tune in KSMU (91.1 FM in Springfield) at noon this Friday, April 3rd to hear Dallas Jones play live, in studio, with support from me, Molly Healey and others. I wish I could tell you that it will be simulcast online, alas this is not the case. Nonetheless, this is a rare opportunity, so don’t miss it!

Jody Bilyeu on the Internet

Big Smith’s mandolinist and prolific songster Jody Bilyeu will be on Missouri State University’s internet radio station The Growl this Wednesday night for an interview and to play a few tunes. You can listen live from 9:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. by clicking “listen live” on their website: http://thegrowl.missouristate.edu/.

Below are the live music listings for the coming weeks and includes other MayApple artists. Your city or town and favorite artist are listed in bold for quick reference. I count three FREE Big Smith shows at first glance – so take a good look, won’t you?

Until next time,
